The Role of Dust Covers
Dust covers (also called shock boots or dust boots) protect the shock absorber rod from dirt, debris, and moisture. A damaged dust cover allows contamination into the shock seal, causing premature failure. They're inexpensive but critical for suspension component life.
The Role of Bump Stops
Bump stops (jounce bumpers) prevent metal-to-metal contact when the suspension fully compresses over large bumps. They're progressive β soft at initial contact, firm at full compression. Worn bump stops can damage shock absorbers and struts.
When to Replace
- During strut or shock replacement (always replace together)
- Visible damage β tears, cracks, or deformation
- Hard bottoming-out over bumps
- As part of a complete suspension overhaul
Quality Matters
Premium dust covers use UV-resistant rubber compounds that withstand temperature extremes from -40Β°F to 250Β°F. Quality bump stops are precision-molded with progressive compression characteristics. We manufacture both components to match OEM specifications.
