Air Suspension Components: Maintenance and Common Failures

How Air Suspension Works

Air suspension uses air springs (air bags) instead of traditional coil springs. An onboard compressor inflates or deflates the springs to maintain ride height and adjust damping. Common on luxury SUVs, sedans, and heavy-duty trucks.

Common Failure Points

  • Air Spring Leaks: Rubber bellows develop cracks over time
  • Compressor Failure: Overheating or moisture damage
  • Height Sensor Issues: Electronic sensors fail or get misaligned
  • Valve Block Malfunctions: Solenoid valves stick or leak
  • Dessicant Saturation: Moisture in the air system

Air Spring Replacement

When replacing air springs, always replace both sides. Use OE-quality replacements for proper fit and durability. Our catalog includes air springs for BMW X5/X6, Mercedes GL/ML, Range Rover, and Audi Q7.

Maintenance Tips

Inspect air bellows annually for cracks or chafing. Keep the system clean β€” debris can damage the compressor intake. Replace the dryer cartridge every 60,000 miles. Use OEM-spec fluids for systems with electronically controlled damping.
